Call for Entries and Judges with Agendas

I am always looking for a local open and juried art competition to enter. There is nothing that drives me more than the spirit of competing against others. I have 3 of these planned now... a) A national artist magazine, b) A local Fredericksburg show, c) The Uniquely Fredericksburg show. The first one has a $2500 1st prize, the second... no prize at all... maybe some name recognition in the area only and the third one has a $1000 best of show prize. Good to win some money and sell something too and my experience is that buyers are insecure (continued...)
Why a Portrait?

Someone asked me the other day why someone would want to commission an oil painting portrait. They pondered that it was because oils done by the likes of Vermeer and Davinci have lasted 600 years and so they last longer that photos. They pondered that it was because possibly the artist had some kind of special "eye" and could see something in the person and present it... something that a photo could not.

My First Nude Model

I was in a college drawing course... I heard they had nude models now and then. I was only like 20 years old and a very testosterone producing horney sort of fellow (not unlike many 20 year old males I would guess--not my fault--a hormonal thing--God's fault).
So we are sitting in those wooden horses with our art stuff in front of us and the teacher announces that we will have a nude model today.
I was excited... not sexually excited... just excited to see a beautiful naked woman and experience the cerebral pleasures, facination, (continued...)
